Who Really Takes Care of a Landscape After It Is Designed?
Before joining Riverlution's riverside clean-up, I often thought about landscape architecture through the lens of design. Drawings, planting plans and masterplans naturally became the focus of my education.
Spending a day removing litter along the River Don changed that perspective. I began noticing how easily small maintenance issues affected biodiversity, accessibility and public perception. A successful landscape depended not only on good design, but on continuous care from local organisations, volunteers and communities.
That experience reminded me that construction is only the beginning of a landscape's life. Stewardship, maintenance and public participation are equally important if a place is to remain resilient over time.
Now, whenever I develop a design proposal, I find myself asking an additional question: who will look after this place ten years from now?
Design creates a landscape. Stewardship allows it to endure.
